Plums are fruiter commonly grown in the Northern mountainous region of our country. They bloom in the spring and ripen in the summer. Parts of plums can be used as drugs.
Other name of plums are Li Tu, Li Thuc…Plums are short trees with short reddish brown branches. Their leaves are pointed at both ends, smooth on the upper side, slightly hairy on the underside of the tendon. Flowers are white, petals are ovate, opposite, nucleolus is smooth with color changing in purple, Flacourtia jangomas red, greenish yellow and often has a side groove. Flowering season is in December - January, ripening season is in May-July.
According to traditional medicine, parts of plum such as fruits, roots, root bark, resin, leaves and nuts ... have curative effects.
Medical name of plums is Ly Tu, pulp contains amino acids such as asparagine, glutamine, glycine, serine, alanine, sugar, organic acid, vitamin C and so on ... According to Oriental medicine, plums have sweet or sour taste, average, can be refered to fecula and kidney.
Effects are to coolen fecula, thermoregulate, detoxicate, blooden, innovate and uretic, to treat tuberculosic diseases, frost heating (Cot Chung, Chieu Nhiet), abdominal plenty of water, liver disease, emphysema. Chinese ancient books (Dien Nam drafted by Dien Nam and Quanzhou) were recorded that plums were eaten directly or grinded for drinking water. Those who are weak should not take.
Plum kernel has medical name as Ly Tu Nhan or Ly Hach Nhan, contains amygdalin, sweet, bitter, average, refered to fecula. Its effects are to blooden, spread retention and aperient. It is used in cases of stumbled, fallen, bruised, swelled, pain, cough and phlegm, hydraulic and pneumatic slowen and obstipation. It is usually in the form of decoction, 8-12g per day or pulverized, sprinkle or cover the wound. In case of burness, use finely ground flour of plum kernel mixed with egg white, apply 1-2 times per day in 5- 7 days. People with weak intestine, diarrhea, ill kidney, spermatorrhea and pregnant women should not use.
Plum leaves have medical name as Ly Thu Diep, sweet and sour tastes, average feature, which are used to treat high fever, eclampsia in children, reduce cough, treat stabbed or beaten wounds. We can infuse with a dose of 8-12g dry leaves per day. For external use, take water, remove trash, bath for children or crush to obtain mash liquor from fresh plum leaves and seep into painful swellings.
Plum latex has medical name as Ly Thu Giao. They commonly use dry latex in plum tree body to treat membranes of eyes, to reduce pain, to resolve swellings and urge measles. Infuse with a drinking dose of 8-16g.
Plum roots have medical name as Ly Can, usually harvested in September – October. Plum roots are cool, slightly cold, bitter and waxy. Their effects are to detoxify, used in urinating with sharp pain, little urinating due to low temperatures, cases such as going to stool with blood, diarrhea, fever, furuncle and poisoning in children. Used as infusion with a dose of 8-12g per day. For external use, pulverize, cover or sprinkle onto the pain.
Plum root bark is often called Ly Can Bi. Use white bark of plum tree roots. It is bitter, salty and cold. Its effects are to coolen, relieve restrained heat due to carpentry, treat diarrhea, heart troubles, lower eruction, cases such as whites, toothache and ulcers ... A dosage of 8-12g, infused. We can infuse into thickened sharp, swallow or take repellent water to cover outside where is wounded.
Some tips according to traditional medicine experiences
Tip 1: wounds stung by insects: Take washed plum nuts, smash and apply on the wound within 5 minutes, then rinse. Apply 2 times per day.
Tip 2: To support for the treatment of diabetes: 0.5kg fresh plums, wash, remove nuts, press for juice, and divide into 3 doses daily for 10 consecutive days.
Tip 3: To reduce toothache: 30g plum roots, thick infusion with 100ml water, hold in mouth in 5-7 minutes in the morning, afternoon, evening before going to bed, hold in mouth within 5 days.
Tip 4: Laxative effect: 10g plum kernel, 10g peach kernel, 10g almond. Four all into 700ml pot, infuse into 250 ml, divide 2 doses per day in 10 consecutive days.
Tip 5: To treat osteoarticular pain when the weather changes: 50g plum leaves and 30g per leaves of tradescantia pallida, peach leaves, ficus leaves and hibiscus leaves. Wash, crush, hay, then soak with wine within 10-15 days. Use this wine to massage the pain 2 times per day.
Tip 6: For nice skin: 250g fresh plums, wash, remove nuts, smash, press for juice, then mix with 250ml rice wine, store in a sealed bottle for gradual use, take 2 times per day, every 10 - 20ml.
Abstain: Those who with weak spleen should not eat many plums.
